| In celebration of the Bicentennial of Huntingdon Borough, the Huntingdon
County Historical Society has published a 160-page, hardcover book entitled Two
Centuries in Huntingdon. The book is a companion volume to the Huntingdon County
Bicentennial book, Second Century. A rich array of vintage photographs will
stir the memories of long-time residents and will delight those who are new to life in
Huntingdon. Festive celebrations, vanished landmarks, events both joyful and tragic are
recreated through the camera's magic lens. What it looked and felt like to walk
Huntingdon's streets in days gone by--as much as 140 years ago--has been captured forever
in the views that are included in this evocative book. Scenes of work and play, changing
modes of transportation, generations of school children, emerging neighborhoods, the rise
and fall of architectural styles--all help in telling the story of Huntingdon's long
history.
The photographs themselves speak volumes, but are made even more
informative by descriptive captions and a carefully researched historical essay on the
development of the borough, written by Nancy S. Shedd, author of previous books on both
the borough's and county's history. The book also includes specially prepared maps
documenting the growth of the borough, a time line covering almost 250 years of
Huntingdon's history, and a chapter on the borough's Centennial year.
Generous support has been given by sponsors whose histories will be
presented in a special section of business biographies and advertisements. Their stories
represent not only the history of Huntingdon Borough, but also its present and future. |
