The Orbisonia-Rockhill Furnace Historical Society began operation in 1996 for the purpose of preserving the heritage of the Twin Boroughs. In that same year the Society purchased the Bedford Furnace house, pictured above, with the intention to turn it into their headquarters as well as a museum and research library.
The Bedford Furnace House, located at 371 Cromwell Street, Orbisonia, is one of the oldest buildings in the area. In 1785 the Bedford Furnace began operation in what is now Orbisonia and, although the location of the furnace has yet to be discovered, local history places it near the site of this building. The Bedford Furnace was the first iron furnace west of the Susquehanna.
Behind the house are a number of large pieces of iron which were excavated recently. These pieces are relics from the Winchester and Rockhill iron furnaces, two other iron furnaces which once operated in the twin boroughs.
