| Pomeroy's 1873 Atlas of Blair & Huntingdon Counties offers a
fascinating glimpse of life in the 19th century. Not only will genealogists enjoy locating
the subjects of their searches on these 19th century maps, but those interested in local
industries, railroads, town and village life, and a lot of other subjects will find much
to interest and amuse them in this volume. Used as a companion to J.Simpson Africa's
1883 History of Huntingdon & Blair Counties, the Atlas adds an extra dimension to
descriptions of where various families settled or businesses and industries were located.
The Atlas contains 55 individual township, town, and village maps for Huntingdon
County, and 44 for Blair County.
Because many area roads have not departed much from their 19th century alignments, it
is possible to travel 20th century roads and highways with these 19th century maps in
hand, and to observe what has changed and what has not. And the new reprint's paper cover
makes it easier to carry and use in car or backpack than the original hard-cover volume.
This new Atlas includes accurate, detailed indexes for both counties, compiled by
Charles Faust (for Huntingdon County) and Alberta Haught (for Blair County). Using a grid
system that divides each page into 12 sections, the indexes greatly simplify the
pinpointing of individual places of residence, business locations, and geographical
features. A clear overlay is available to create the index grid on each page. |
